The Metaverse Journal: ABC island hits a snag

  • ozzi merlin · 2 years ago
It was a total disaster and looked like mushy porridge more than an island!
I guess there is some bad apple(ie some one) that caused this, one has to be careful as to what could happen if u r on SL on the web!!!
    I hope it is fixed.

    What the ????

Time to request a roll-back of the island, perhaps.

Rollback seems to have fixed it.

It does make me wonder if the sandbox is more trouble than it's worth. While I've heard various theories that it may not be the 'smoking gun' in this case of vandalism, as a former ABC Admin, vandalism and griefing are a daily (sometimes hourly) occurrence in the ABC sim because of the sandbox. It was certainly the cause of the Unearthed Club's destruction albeit inadvertently. Why does the ABC need a sandbox? Is it just to inflate the traffic figures? If so, what is the ABC's purpose in Second Life?

    Just some thoughts.

    Thanks for the info Lowell!

As an sl builder I live in mortal fear that something will happen to one of my finished builds as a result of griefing, property owner error, or worst of all - poor planning on my behalf. Info like this helps me to stay on top of potential hazards and solutions.

I'm glad ABC was able to get everything restored. :-)

hi, just responding to Skribe's comments. The sandbox is certainly the riskiest part of the island because it means the ABC allows visitors to take part in the creative process too. It seems to have become a social hangout space because of the freedom allowed (people can rez stuff from their inventory and create spontaneous parties and gatherings). The figures show that this is the most popular part of the island - precisely because of this freedom. We are as surprised as anyone by this - so it's certainly not a case that we're putting the sandbox there to inflate the figures. We're learning about this environment as we go - feedback from the community and the traffic figures help us work out what's working and what's not. So far our view is that while the sandbox brings risks, the benefits of the strong community that has built up and the interest in events, competitions, Prim School etc significantly outweigh these risks. We are still investigating the cause of yesterday's events but there is no indication that it was linked to the sandbox specifically. Always good to hear your thoughts, Skribe - keep them coming :)

Glad it all got sorted out in the end....

Very strange that somebody managed to get all those permissions... I guess it's a reminder to keep your passwords secure and to never ever share your passwords with anyone!
