They tried the same trick before on the web with Microsoft Passport (now re-branded LiveID) and it failed miserable, no-one except M$ used it.
That's not to say the idea is without merit but never if M$ is in charge of it. The most obvious flaw in their plan is that this is really one of Linden Lab's future plans - to be the glue that binds virtual worlds together - and they're years ahead of M$. The day to REALLY worry is when LL sell The Grid to M$ and I wish that was less likely than it is.
